our city break starts with a stroll around the Market Square – one of the biggest in Europe, with the famous Cloth Hall (13th century) and Saint Mary’s Church with the Wit Stwosz beautiful gothic altar inside. After that, we visit Wawel Royal Castle with the Royal Cathedral and Royal Appartments. This is the place of great importance for the Polish people and the state in general. It was the residence of Polish kings, many important historic events took place there. In the Royal Cathedral there is a most known bell in Poland – Zygmunt’s Bell, as well as burial site in the St. Leonard’s crypt with many tombs of kings. Overnight stay.
breakfast. We start the day with an excursion to the Auschwitz – Birkenau Museum. This former German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp, although not very easy on the eye, it is a must-see in Poland. Placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, it was the largest of all the Nazi death camps. We can see prison blocks, the remains of the gas chambers, and the crematorium in Auschwitz. The visit continues after a short break and the visitors can go up to the watch tower in Birkenau part to see the panorama of the camp. Overnight stay in Oswiecim.
breakfast. The last day of our city break start with an excursion to the Wieliczka Salt Mine – another place which is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List since 1978. Located 15 km from Cracow, Wieliczka is mainly famous from having one of the oldest active salt mines in Europe. It’s been operating since the 13th century until now! During our underground tour, we can see many beautifully decorated salt chambers with carvings and statues, beautifully illuminated staircases, and above all – the Chapel of St.Kinga which needed over 30 years to be completed and over 20000 tons of rock salt had to be removed.
